Today is Yom Kippur, so I thought that I would briefly mention Inedia and the related concept, breatharianism. Yes, these are philosophies founded on the idea that one can live without food, and even without water, permanently. While you might think this would be one of the shortest running ideas in history, there is actually an ongoing following worldwide, estimated to be in the thousands. The theory revolves around the idea that nourishment can be derived from prana, the internal Hindu life force. Or from sunlight, although a photosynthesizing human has yet to be definitively identified.
Besides the modern day folks, most of whom have been heartily discredited, there are historical devotees of prolonged fasting, including Jesus and several Catholic saints.
I have enough trouble lasting the day-long fast that Yom Kippur requires, so I'm not quite ready to become an inediast quite yet. So there you have it!
